How to Import a Used Excavator from China to Ecuador
A practical Ecuador guide covering used excavator inspection, customs checks, Guayaquil routing, shipping documents and landed cost.
Importing a used excavator to Ecuador is easier to control when the machine inspection, document review and Guayaquil-area logistics are planned before shipment. The goal is to avoid a mismatch between the purchased unit and the customs description.
1. Define the job and machine class
Select the model based on altitude, soil, access and production target. Ask for hydraulic-cycle videos, travel and swing tests, leak inspection, serial-plate photos and wear measurements. Confirm whether attachments will ship with the machine.
- Confirm operating weight, transport dimensions and attachment requirements.
- Compare serial number, manufacturing year, operating hours and maintenance evidence.
- Choose a model with practical local parts and service support.
2. Verify the actual excavator before payment
Do not evaluate a used excavator from listing photos alone. Request a cold-start video, walk-around inspection, boom and arm cycle, swing, travel, hydraulic response and visible leak check. The serial plate should match the quotation and export documents. Ask for close views of the undercarriage, boom foot, stick, bucket linkage, cylinders, engine bay and cab display.
3. Confirm import requirements with a local broker
An Ecuadorian customs broker should confirm classification, taxes, used-machinery requirements, certificates, valuation and any technical or environmental controls for the exact excavator. The invoice and packing list description must match the reviewed unit.
Important: regulations, tax treatment and document requirements can change. A licensed customs broker in Ecuador should confirm the current requirements for the exact model, year, serial number and shipping method before the balance payment or vessel booking.
4. Compare FOB and CIF quotations correctly
An FOB quotation normally covers the machine and agreed export-side work up to loading at the named Chinese port. A CIF quotation normally adds ocean freight and cargo insurance to the named destination port, but it does not automatically include customs clearance, duties, port handling, storage, demurrage or inland delivery. Compare quotations line by line instead of comparing only the headline price.
5. Choose the shipping method
Guayaquil is a common planning point, but the final terminal and shipping method depend on vessel availability, machine size and inland destination. Confirm whether the quotation uses a standard container, flat rack, RoRo or breakbulk and who pays each local charge.
- Container: strong protection and predictable handling when the machine fits after approved disassembly.
- Flat rack or breakbulk: useful for larger excavators but requires careful securing and port planning.
- RoRo: possible only when the route, port and machine condition meet carrier requirements.
6. Prepare the document pack
Before dispatch, align the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading instructions, machine serial number, model description, weight and dimensions. If the broker requests additional certificates, inspection records or translated documents, confirm them before loading.
7. Plan the total landed cost
Include terminal handling, customs services, taxes, possible examination, storage, free-time limits and inland transport. For delivery into the highlands, confirm road restrictions, permits and suitable low-bed transport before the machine arrives.
A practical budget should include the excavator, inspection or preparation, China-side transport, export handling, ocean freight, insurance, destination charges, customs services, taxes or duties where applicable, storage risk and final inland transport.
Recommended buying sequence
- Send the application, preferred models and budget.
- Receive shortlisted machines with serial numbers and inspection evidence.
- Ask the local broker to confirm importability and required documents.
- Compare FOB and CIF options using the same machine and destination.
- Approve the machine, loading plan and document draft before shipment.
